Text Box: Leonardo da Vinci—Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa is one of the most recognisable and therefore most famous images in the world. Painted in the early 16th century this oil on poplar portrait is now housed in the Louvre in France.

Also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde the identity of the sitter has been widely speculated on but common expert concensus now puts her as being Lisa del Giocondo the wife of a wealthy silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. It is said that Francesco commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to do the work although the actual date of the sitting is a mystery. The date range for the painting of the Mona Lisa is put as c. 1503–1519.

The popularity of the da Vinci Mona Lisa stems from the sitter’s facial expression which has been described as ‘enigmatic’ and unreadable. Is she smiling, happy or sad? Speculation is always rife when it comes to this famous image. Those who have visited the Louvre in person often say that the Mona Lisa’s eyes follow the viewer.

The nature of the popularity of the Mona Lisa has led to the painting being one of the most widely caricatured and recognised images in the world.
